Move to Carlton, live in Italy

By Jamil Allouche

Italy is renowned for rich food, quaint cafe culture and excellent wine, but the Mediterranean country is worlds away from Melbourne, right? Residents of Carlton real estate might just find this European haven is closer to home than they thought.

One stroll along Lygon Street in this Victorian suburb will make even the most homesick Italian expat feel right at home.

Although Italians made up a good share of Melbourne's original European settlers, it wasn't until the post-WWII period that Italian immigrants started establishing the vibrant scene that exists in Carlton today, according to the Victorian Multicultural Commission.

Pick up a traditional slice at Toto's Pizza if you're out for lunch with the kids, or you could choose some cured meats or artisan Italian cheeses at D.O.C. delicatessen if you plan on entertaining later.

Celebrating a special occasion? If you're heading out on date night, Lygon Street's many fine restaurants south of Grattan Street could be the perfect venue for your night. There are several gelato shops dotting the street as well, which will compete to be your dessert of choice.

Carlton residents get to enjoy "Little Italy" every day – just another reason to check out property in this hot suburb.
