Lygon Street dinner dates to steal your heart away

By Jamil Allouche

Whether it's a special occasion or just a treat-yourself kind of night, owners of real estate in Brunswick love to take advantage of the multi-cultural array of dining options in the area. As Brunswick is known for its large Greek and Italian communities, it comes as no surprise that some of the best restaurants in town feature these Mediterranean cuisines.

So, if you're passing through or looking for a hot new dinner spot in your hometown, check out these top restaurants on Melbourne's famous Lygon Street.

Brunswick's Grecian paradise – Hellenic Republic

As you head down Lygon Street you'll come upon a mural of gladiator-like warriors on the battlefield, contrasted against a beautiful sky and graffiti style messages. Finished with especially Grecian blue and white awnings and "Hellenic Republic" in bold letters, this eclectic but quintessentially Melbourne building is home to some of the best Greek food your tastebuds may ever know.

Originally opened in 2008, and now sister to two other locations in Kew and Williamstown, Hellenic Republic is a classic taverna serving traditional Greek food with a modern twist. The menu is subject to seasonal availability, but the best way to experience it is by getting your friends together and going for the sharing menu. That way, you all get to try a little bit of everything Hellenic cuisine has to offer.

iL Cantuccio in Carlton's Little Italy

Perhaps the number one restaurant in Carlton, iL Cantuccio ("little nook") serves homestyle Italian wonders. The rustic brick interior is romantically lit with lantern style sconces. Old Chianti bottles hang in bundles from the ceiling, and Italian farming tools decorate the walls.

iL Cantuccio is led by founder Mario, his wife Lory, and their daughter. Having operated since 1983, this Italian cantina is dear to the hearts of many in Melbourne who sing praise for Mario's exquisite service and memory for his customer's names.

The menus are designed with the same passion the food is cooked, meaning hearty meals guaranteed to not leave you hungry. The traditional Calabrese involtini is a staple on the menu and an absolute must-try for lovers of all things salty and rich.

The best Brunswick pizza at 400 Gradi

This ever-popular pizzeria is the brainchild of chef Johnny Di Francesco, descendant of Naples, home of the best pizza in the world. In 2014, he took first place in the Pizza World Championship in Italy against 600 other competitors. Now, he continues to run 400 Gradi, feeding hundreds of hungry Melbournites each day.

The menu doesn't end at pizza however. 400 Gradi's menu is a showcase of Naples' incredible flavours, including fresh and bright seafood and hand-made pasta. A variety of antipasto options, from cheese boards to charcuterie are also on offer, easily ideal for a single person or a crowd.
