How does Moreland plan to support its local businesses?

By Jamil Allouche

There are plenty of developments happening around the region that are sure to affect you, whether you're a long time resident or looking for real estate in Brunswick for the first time. The Moreland Community Vision is a massive publication released by the Moreland City Council that outlines its plans and objectives for the area. The great thing about it, is that it's formed out of the opinions, concerns and suggestions of more than 1,300 residents in the region. How's that for a supportive and collected community?

The Community Vision highlights what the city council plans to achieve from 2015 to 2018. One of the key focus areas is on expanding and sustaining the local economy.

"Our local economy is strong and innovative businesses flourish. Sustainable economic growth throughout the city offers employment opportunities for residents," explains the publication. But how can this be further improved?

The document highlights three major areas:

  • Locally living – The community wants to to have access to a wide range of services, goods and jobs in the area. Ways to implement this include creating neighbourhood activity centres and programmes to better match the skills and needs in the local workforce. There will also be a drive to get youth and disadvantaged groups ready for employment in the community.
  • Economic expansion – Moreland wants local businesses to thrive and grow. This may require facilitating more investment and development opportunities and pushing job creation.
  • Innovative businesses – Moreland aims to be a hotspot for small businesses to start up and create new service and product ideas.
