Making the most of Australian Mediation Awareness Week

By Jamil Allouche

With Christmas fast approaching, it's easy to become overwhelmed by all the challenges, to-do-lists and conflicts coming together in the final weeks of the year. Luckily, there's something that can help you navigate these difficult tasks: mediation.

And the even better news is that it doesn't matter whether you live in Brunswick East or St Kilda, you can get involved with the national Australian Mediation Awareness Week! So what exactly is this week about and what does mediation mean?

The Australian Mediation Awareness Week

This year's Australian Mediation Awareness Week will offer people to gain a better understanding of the benefits mediation has across sectors. Promoted by the Australian Dispute Resolution Cooperative, Mediation Institute Pty Ltd, Interact Support Incorporated – among other mediation services and independent mediators – a number of events will be held throughout the week.

Between the 7th and 12th of December, seminars, discussions, talks and mock mediations will all be involved to improve the overall comprehension of mediation itself.

How mediation can help you

The Australian Mediation Association (AMA) explains mediation as the process of a neutral, third party person (mediator) helping two fighting parties come to a mutually acceptable agreement.

Resolving conflicts through mediation can help provide a solution which meets individual needs in a much more timely manner, without the high cost of formal litigation. The efficient, confidential and flexible process also removes the risk of business disruption and allows for a more productive conflict resolution.

Billions of dollars are spent on legal and other fees each year in correlation with business, construction, community, family and workplace sectors. Even simple conflicts can take over a year in court, calling for significant time and money inputs.

Engaging with professional mediation on the other hand can allow you to circumnavigate all these issues by cutting right to the chase. So, to help you overcome the challenges of any dispute you may have – or even if you know of someone struggling – we encourage you to go along to at least some of the seminars offered in Melbourne this year.

And if you don't want to go to a physical event, why not join a webinar instead? Conflicts and issues can include a wide range of topics, so you're certain to find something of use for you throughout the week.
