Moreland’s Advances In Energy Innovation

By Jamil Allouche

An increasing number of people are putting more value on how energy efficient and eco-friendly their home, and their surrounding environment, is.

Those with property in Brunswick or seeking to buy real estate in the area who also put high value on eco-friendly elements in their region, have reason to be encouraged.

This is because Moreland City Council has won the Energy Innovation Award at the Keep Australia Beautiful Australian Sustainable Cities Awards this year.

The win was announced November 24, and acknowledged the huge effort Moreland City Council has put into making the area more environmentally sustainable.

Around 4,000 residents, businesses and community groups helped play a part in the council's reduction of carbon emissions.

The council lowered its emissions by 410 tonnes and cut its electricity bill by $42,209 annually, a huge achievement.

One innovative way this has been achieved is through reducing the distance that food needs to travel, with households ordering organic goods online and collecting them from a Food Host location around the city.

"This is a collaborative achievement and a huge thanks and congratulations go out to the community and all our partners, particularly the Moreland Energy Foundation and CERES Environment Park," said Moreland Mayor Lambros Tapinos.
